Liturgy

Prayer and worship are two of the primary ways the Church carries out its mission in the world. At St. Andrew’s we highly value this expression of our Christian mission. We strive to emphasize the beauty and generosity of our offering of praise and thanksgiving. We unite ourselves with others to acknowledge the holiness of God, to hear God’s Word, to offer prayer, and to celebrate the sacraments (Book of Common Prayer, 857).The Holy Eucharist is our primary act of Christian worship. We gather to celebrate the Eucharist according to the Book of Common Prayer every Sunday. We offer two unique opportunities to worship each Sunday morning, at 8 &10am.

8am Holy Eucharist: We gather in our chapel (Holy Rood is located just inside our main entrance) for a quiet, meditative service. During this service we worship according to Elizabethan-style language (what Episcopalians call “Rite I” or “traditional”). The service is simple and crisp.

10am Holy Eucharist: We gather in our primary worship space (located to the left of the chapel) for the Festal Eucharist. The choir leads us in traditional Anglican hymns as well as music from the African-American musical tradition. The service also includes chant, bells, a gospel procession, and even incense during some of our most significant holy days (Easter, Christmas, Pentecost, etc.) Persons of all ages assist in the leading of worship. Sunday School is available during the Service of the Word.

We also gather to worship during the week. Each Tuesday at 7:30am we offer Morning Prayer – a simple 30-minute service of prayer, Scripture and reflection. Those who would like, are welcome to stay for the Bible study that follows Morning Prayer.

The Church calendar features many Major Feast days throughout the year. We celebrate each of these days liturgically. Check our calendar for the specifics.

We hope you will considering joining St. Andrew’s for worship. We believe you will experience the presence of God in the beauty and poetry of the worship and in the kindness and generosity of the people.
